CDC (9270 Cricket)

Third sub 5.25" HDD, it was a technological failure

Why its important
Announced May 23, 1983, the Cricket included thin film media (plated), thin film heads and a negative pressure air bearing [true?], a combination of technologies that apparently was too much for commercial success. It was the third sub 5.25" HDD behind SyQuest and Rodime.

The combination of technolgies was somewhat prescient of disk drives of the late 1990s.

By 1984 the product had been withdrawn.
